Chapter Seven
What a dream I had. I was lost, walking in a volcanic kind of fog. A fog so thick it burned my throat and hurt my eyes. Next thing I knew, a voice said in my ear, âCome, Jepoi.â Before I could respond, what felt like dozens of hands grabbed me and my senses began to spin. I felt like I was flying and falling all at once. I heard so many voices, all of them arguing.
âDonât do this, Kanalaoa,â one voice said.
âSilence!â the voice that screamed frightened me, and apparently the nameless, faceless others around me.
The chattering stopped. I became filled with a cold sense of dread and panic. The weightless feeling of terror continued as I stumbled and fell, landing face down on a patch of frigid, but fragrant grass.
The hands slipped away and, tasting blood on my lips, I raised my head. I looked around. I was in some sort of forest. I knew these lush, primordial places existed in Hawaii, but frankly had never visited any of them. Iâd always been too afraid of being stranded in one. To be really honest, whenever my work flights sailed over the rainforest areas around Puna and Hilo, I always panicked weâd crash and I would be there lost and injured.
I looked around. I could hear all the sounds associated with the wilds. This was my idea of hell. I seemed to be alone. It was better than the hands and voices, particularly the screamerâs voice, but I began to really freak out now.
âHello?â I called out.
Silence. Even the native birdsong had deserted me. I tried to rise, but suddenly couldnât move, the chilly sensation now washing over me like a flood of shaved ice covering my back.
I heard the flutter of wings, as if the birds Iâd heard had sensed a frightening presence and had taken off. I could move my head slightly and looked up to see the colourful spectacle of red birds winging their way out of the treetops.
I felt the crush of something heavy on my back.
âReady, Jepoi?â The menacing voice had returned, a shade lower. The man spoke right into my ear.
The hands that had abandoned me returned and yanked me to a sitting position as the crowd of whispery voices continued once more.
âWeâre going to blindfold you and plug your ears,â said a female voice. She sounded like a child. I tried to twist my head to her direction.
âWhere are you?â I cried out. I began to panic. As the hands grabbed me once more, the young female vanished in a flash. I became dizzy as the forest began to spin around me.
I seemed to be able to move and I shook off the hands, the frozen feeling of paralysis leaving me. I got to my feet and ran. I heard feet thundering beside me, the sun dappling in the trees. Voices carried laughter on the breeze. They were mocking me. All I could see were trees and everything looked the same.
